Kennedy Institute congratulates Senator John Thune as new Majority Leader

November 13, 2024 (Boston, MA) – The Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate congratulates Senator John Thune (R-SD) who was today elected as the new Majority Leader for the Senate, replacing Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) who is retiring after serving as leader for the past 18 years.

“Sen. John Thune has won the respect of his colleagues in the Senate and beyond and we congratulate him on being chosen by Senate Republicans as their new leader,” said Bruce A. Percelay, Kennedy Institute Board Chair.

“The start of a new Congress will elevate discussions amongst Senators to reach agreement on ways to enhance the functioning of the upper chamber. That is a welcomed development at a time when gridlock gets in the way of some of the basic functions of Senators and the body as a whole,” added Adam Hinds, Kennedy Institute CEO.

Senator Thune’s decades of public service will prepare him well for the new position, he served as a U.S. House representative for three terms before winning his current Senate seat in 2004 and is now serving his fourth term. He previously served in the number two position in Senate leadership as the whip, and previously served as chairman of the Senate Republican Policy Committee from 2009–2011 and chairman of the Senate Republican Conference from 2012-2018.
