Support the Carey Parker Fellowship for Leadership in Public Service

The Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate is launching a new Carey Parker Fellowship for Leadership in Public Service. Carey Parker served as Senator Kennedy’s Legislative Director from 1969 to 2009. Carey was renowned for his intellect, attention to detail, and adeptness at fostering collaboration across party lines. He served as a mentor to hundreds of the Senator’s staff and was deeply cherished. Carey’s model of public service provides future generations of Senate staffers and Senate scholars with the opportunity to follow in his footsteps through the Kennedy Institute.

The Carey Parker Fellowship for Leadership in Public Service is designed for experienced public servants who have spent a significant portion of their professional careers in service to the US Senate. It is intended as an opportunity for those who would benefit from the time to reflect on the history, operations, and needs of the Senate and its role in modern American democracy.

The Institute will provide the time, office space, and a stipend for each fellow to conduct a signature project focused on understanding and improving the function and operation of the modern US Senate. A portion of the Fellow’s time will be dedicated to providing expertise and assistance to the Kennedy Institute’s award-winning programs in K-12 civic education, democracy, and public events as well as to enriching the culture of the Institute. Your contribution to the Carey Parker Fellowship fund will not only support the establishment of this fellowship, but will also support the Kennedy Institute’s overall work to address critical issues facing our American democracy.

“Brilliant. Eloquent. Generous. Tens of millions who may never know Carey Parker’s name will live better, fairer lives because of the hopes he helped Ted Kennedy write into law.”

Bob Shrum
Director of the Center for the Political Future and the Carmen H. and Louis Warschaw Chair in Practical Politics at USC Dornsife

“I’m also certain all alumni staffers would agree that the single individual who had the most consistent, positive impact on the legislative successes of Senator Kennedy’s 47 years in the U.S. Senate was Carey Parker.”

Paul G. Kirk, Jr.
Former U.S. Senator (MA)

“It is safe to say, with unanimous consent of all, that no single individual was held in such high regard by Senator Kennedy as Carey Parker. In every staff meeting, when all issues were raised and vetted, the Senator looked to Carey for wise counsel and advice. Kennedy’s legacy is Carey’s legacy.” – Kenneth R. Feinberg, Attorney
