Civic Art Projects

Explore the resources below to channel your students’ passion for art and civics into a meaningful and engaging learning experience.

ELEMENTARY RESOURCES

A Symbol of Welcome
This activity teaches students about the Statue of Liberty, a symbol of welcome in the United States that has welcomed immigrants to our shores since 1886. After learning about the Statue of Liberty, students will have the opportunity to design their own symbol to help people feel welcomed and comforted in their community.

Political Posters Activity
This activity teaches students about political messaging and the importance of communication before political elections. Next, students will use their newfound knowledge to design their own political poster and communicate their campaign message.

MIDDLE SCHOOL/HIGH SCHOOL RESOURCES

From Her Beacon Civic Art Project
Students will work collaboratively to create a mural of the Statue of Liberty to show the statue as a representation of freedom and a symbol of welcome to immigrants coming from other countries. This activity can be modified to support various grade levels and encompasses multiple academic subjects including Art, Social Studies, Civics, and English Language Arts.

From Her Beacon Mural Templates
These mural templates will assist your students as they’re completing the From Her Beacon Civic Art Project.

A Seat at the Table Civic Art Project
Inspired by Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm’s story, this lesson plan encourages students to consider the importance of diverse representation in public discourse. Educators will help students facilitate the design and creation of your class’s own chairs—your “seats at the table” of representative democracy.

Considering Leadership: A Civic Art Project
This curriculum packet guides students to think about the qualities of good leadership, and helps students create a political poster representing leadership and a shared vision of the future. The guide also teaches students about elections generally, and helps them consider issues that matter to them so they can lend their voices to the national conversation about leadership.

Notes on the Constitution: A Civic Art Project
Art teacher James Hobin created this lesson plan to engage his students at Boston International Newcomer’s Academy (BINcA) in an artistic form of civic expression. In the lesson, students create art works based on an examination of the language of the Constitution and the personal connections they make.
